LASIK surgery offers many patients with the most common vision problems – nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatisms, are good candidates for LASIK.

LASIK can be used to correct refractive errors within the following diopter ranges:

• Myopia: 0.75 and up
• Hyperopia: +0.75 to +4.50
• Astigmatism: +/- 0.75 to +/- 6.00

If your refractive error correction needs are not within these ranges, the doctors at, BC LASIK, will provide a further consultation to inform you of your vision correction options.

Some patients have a corneal surface too thin for cutting a flap to access the layers beneath, where the actual reshaping of the cornea occurs. In these cases, our doctors may recommend photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), a laser vision correction procedure that predates LASIK. In PRK, the cornea’s outer layer is removed so the surgeon can access the layers beneath. Since the

outer layer must grow back after surgery, the healing time is longer than with LASIK, and there is more discomfort.

During your laser eye surgery center consultation, we will also consider other factors that may temporarily or permanently disqualify you from undergoing laser eye surgery. These may include:

• Pregnancy
• Severe heart problems, especially those requiring the use of a pacemaker
• Diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus,
• Vascular disease, severe glaucoma, cataracts, ocular herpes simplex, or sever diabetes
• Use of prescription drugs, including Accutane for acne,
• Imitrex® for migraines, and various immune system medications

These are only general guidelines . Some patients, around 10-15%, are not good  candidates for laser eye surgery. LASIK has quickly become one of the most popular and effective elective surgeries in the world. The following is pertinent information that every patient needs to know before undergoing laser eye surgery.

The laser vision correction experts at BC LASIK can determine if you are the right candidate for this procedure by performing a FREE pre-LASIK exam.

The recovery differs between patients. Some patients will see clearly the next morning when they wake up; some patients might have a blurry vision for a couple of days.

A few days after your procedure, you are likely to experience some degree of discomfort. Your vision may be blurry and/or may fluctuate between seeing clear and blurry during this time. In some cases, a patient’s vision improves immediately after the procedure but later becomes blurry. These conditions affect patients differently. The final outcomes of PRK and LASIK are very similar; the difference is the healing time.

• Wear the sunglasses provided. Most sunglasses do not provide adequate protection. Follow the eye drop regimen recommended by your surgeon and wear eye shields during your sleep.
• Please read the activity schedule below.
• Attend your required post-operative examinations.

Please remember that your follow-up care is as important as the actual procedure.

All follow up appointments are covered with BCLASIK for the first year. You should see your doctor to check your progress of recovery after your procedure. (Biennial exams are required after your 1 year annual check up in order to monitor the health of your eyes and assess for any possible need for enhancements in the future)
